Looking for work takes time. This guide keeps it simple, whether it is your first job or your fifth.
1. Decide what work you want, and where
Be clear on two things before you start:
- The kind of work. Factory, driving, shop and sales, office, security, housekeeping, ITI trades. Pick two or three, not ten.
- How far you can travel every day. A job in Toranagallu is a long trip from Hampi. If you cannot make the journey daily for a year, it is not the right job.
Employers ask both questions in the first minute of a call. Knowing your answer makes you sound serious.
2. Keep your details ready
Before you apply anywhere, have these ready:
- A working mobile number that you answer
- Your qualification, and the year you finished
- How many years you have worked, and at which companies
- Two or three skills you can actually do

3. Apply to several jobs, not one
Most people apply to one job and wait. That is the slowest way.
Apply to every job that fits. Employers are looking at many candidates, and a job you did not get is not a reflection on you. Ten applications gets you a call far sooner than one.
4. Answer your phone
This is the step people lose jobs on.
Employers call. They usually call once, sometimes twice, and then move to the next person. Keep your phone charged and answer numbers you do not recognise for the next few weeks. If you miss a call, ring back the same day.
5. Be honest about what you can do
If you have not driven a four wheeler, do not say you have. If your ITI is in fitting and the job needs welding, say so. Employers here hire for years, not weeks, and the truth comes out in the first week anyway.
Saying "I have not done that, but I learn quickly" is a good answer. Many local employers train.
6. Follow up once, politely
If a week has passed and you have heard nothing, one call or message is fine. More than that works against you.
